  I attended the school open day today the 3rd of March 2018. I’m speechless, everything its perfect in this school. The staff, the students, the principal even the security at the gate. The school is extra need and they have all the activities. I pray that they accept my son coz I’m sure I won’t regret the decision of taking him to this school.

  A school. I recommend home-schooling your child. Boys High’s system is in accordance with the Department of Basic Education (SA), and therefore not up to standard with international systems. All top-performing students at the school of each senior year always have extra (expensive) tutoring for Mathematics and Physical Science, and this after R35,000. The NSC of matric does not allow for international opportunities. Do not think that the beautiful facilities, old buildings, and 13 or so sports and almost 50 clubs will bring success. Until the school improves by changing to an international system, such as A-Levels, do not send your child to any school in South Africa for that matter. The school is better than most, but not as good as it would appear. In addition, teachers of South Africa generally have fishy motives for becoming teachers (e.g. those who are after establishing a god complex and see an easy target: children). The odds of receiving good-spirited teachers who care are therefore highly against your son. The option of changing classes/teachers is unavailable. An excellent thing about this school is its Headmaster, Mr A.D. Reeler, who is unfortunately restricted from allowing the school to run ideal curricula such as those in Finland. However, boys are, as by tradition, told here that they will become men, but I have to object: when gr. 12 is reached an attitude toward those in the lower levels of the hierarchy emerges from the pupils. The school, by whatever good reasons, breeds pupils to be, among others, proud. The repercussions of this 'becoming men who are proud' include perpetual, sophistic fixation with the school. Boys (or ‘men’) go on and on about "Boys High!" failing to realize into fulfilled beings grounded, instead, in truth and reality. Another thing to consider is the school's Music Department: pupils are told in their first class "Music people are smarter", instantly creating an entitlement issuing an arrogant 'license to kill' non-Music schoolboys. It is a stray from truth induced by certain staff members of the department. Your son could be very bad-mouthed too after his five years at Boys High. But despite this, the school offers great opportunities for playing instruments (consider if it is out of interest or merely for status), and playing in bands. Sports cover from table tennis to water-polo, and perform well at fixtures in all. Take German, French or Sepedi (2nd additional), IT, AP Mathematics (A-Levels equivalent/gr. 13), A-Levels English Literature (only as an extra/8th subject), Biology, History, etc. Clean Cambridge A-Levels is much better an option in this regard: three to five subjects instead of seven at Boys High (including L.O. and Afr 1st add.), where if you wish to take the two A-Level subjects the school offers, it would have to be in addition to your seven main ones, thereby giving you a total of nine - ridiculous. You also have to pay privately for these examinations to be written and literature books (in the case of English). These extra subjects don’t count toward anything: Universities in SA disregard them completely, and it still does not suffice for applying to Universities such as Oxford. The 14-year-old student who enrolled at the University of Pretoria in 2017 for a BSc in Physics followed the A-Levels system (home-schooling). If you want your child to be ‘excellente!’ (or normal), take the administrative responsibility onto yourself and hire tutors for harder subjects, instead of just leaving it to some school. Furthermore, a new world-class hall, and a library joined with a music centre, was built in 2015-16, but non-Music students may not enter the music centre. Boys in the school display respect for the elderly, staff, and outsiders. The school has alumni of note, like Elon Musk. However, such people would be successful no matter the school they attended. Think not that a school will bring your child success, in fact, stop encouraging material success altogether. The fate of your child lies in your overseeing and wiser decisions… make the right ones.

  I rarely give a five star review but this place definitely deserves it. The scenery is amazing from the grounds to the buildings. The staff and students are friendly and welcoming and have a genuine love and respect for one another as well as the school. The school is well maintained as well as updated. The feeling of family is present here, this is very rare and not found often among schools. Pretoria Boys High is truly a gem in this country.

  Attended my 40-year reunion with pride last week. PBHS is steeped in tradition but is a progressive modern school. Apart from academic excellence, the school offers numerous sporting, cultural, social and community options for a rounded education. The grounds are immaculate and are really a pleasure to walk around - very few educational institutions offer such a historic and natural environment.
