The stadium itself is fantastic. Pity about the area.

Stadium is always clean and nice atmosphere but beware of pick pockets... As soon as event is over gates are opened and some dodgy people loom around, don't walk alone on the out skirts, and don't allow your phone to be seen. Inside stadium is awesome

Ellis park stadium, also known as Emirates airline Park, has a long history in South Africa and is the second biggest stadium in the country. It stands proudly amidst a mixture of urban decay and new projects delivering urban renewal. This was the stadium where the Springboks overcome the All Black's in the Rugby World Cup in 1995, bringing a new wave of euphoria to the young democratic state, with the decisive moment coming from a drop goal in dying seconds from the boot of Joel Stransky. Equally important was the assignment of James Small and Joost van der Westhuizen to stop the mighty Jonah Lomu. Even more decisive was the presence of the first democratic President, Nelson Mandela, sporting a springbok cap and Jersey, uniting the country behind the Springboks and collectively willing them to victory. Who else could have stopped the All Blacks at that time?? More recently the management of the Ellis Park precinct was handed over by the Golden Lions to a majority black owned consortium that included Orlando Pirates football club, as a major shareholder. The stadium mostly hosts international and local rugby and football matches, including the Springboks, the Gauteng Lions and Orlando Pirates sometimes - the mighty buccaneers also make use of Orlando Stadium in Soweto. It includes conferencing and entertainment facilities, and a museum which is accessible to the public.

Very nice stadium. Just be aware of the area especially if you go watch a night game.
